Top tips for using Sanakirja.fi

How to get started

Create a Sanakirja.fi shortcut on all your devices for quick access. Do it at www.sanakirja.fi.

Set a password to your user account on the My Account page to have easy access on all your devices. If you have forgotten your password, log out and click Forgot your password? when logging back in.

If you access the service with an arganizational Microsoft account, Haka login or via IP recognition, you don’t need to set a password.

Take advantage of the smart search functions. The search starts suggesting words as you type and converts inflected words to their base form – convenient, if you don’t know what the base form is. If there are no dictionary results for your search word, it gets machine translated – you can machine translate short sentences as well. You can turn this feature off in the settings.

Customise the dictionary settings to your liking. You can access the settings from the ⚙️icon above the search bar. You can, for example, use a compact article view, change the order of specialist domains in search results and decide whether to display usage examples and audio.

Utilise our handy word inflection tables. If you see a book icon in the search result, you can view various inflected forms in a table view. Grammatical information can also be found directly in the search result in square brackets, for example the irregular inflections in English and the inflections of Swedish nouns and verbs.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for, leave a translation request to our editorial team by clicking the Request translation button.

Only users who are logged in can submit translation requests.

You can see details and give us feedback on the search result by clicking the three dots in the top right corner.

Only users who are logged in can give feedback.

Create your own word lists and practice your vocabulary. There are ready-made Finnish-English word lists which you can utilise as well.

Our power tips

In MOT Kielipalvelu® you can select either the Languages tab or the Dictionaries tab when looking up words. Use the Languages tab when you want to look up words in our entire dictionary selection in the selected language pair and go to the Dictionaries tab when you want to get results from a specific dictionary.

Dictionaries by Oxford University Press are only available on the Dictionaries tab.

When typing in your search word, you can use the * symbol to replace multiple letters and the ? symbol to replace one letter either in the beginning, middle or end of a word for a broader search result. For instance, if you type in cat*, you get all the words starting with cat as a result.

You can look up words simultaneously in multiple dictionaries of your choice with the My Dictionary Group feature. Go to the Dictionaries tab and choose My Dictionary Group. You can edit your group by clicking the book icon and select the dictionaries of your choice (excluding Oxford University Press dictionaries).

You can now add MOT Oxford Dictionary of English, MOT New Oxford American Dictionary and MOT Oxford Thesaurus of English to My Dictionary Group!

When you are using the Dictionaries tab in MOT Kielpalvelu®, you can choose from three different views into the search result after your first search:

  • Search results in headwords: you get results the same way as on the Languages tab except the results come from the selected dictionary
  • Search results in entire text: you get results from all the data in our dictionaries so in addition to a headword and its translation the result shows if your search word appears in usage examples or idioms
  • Similar words: you get as results a list of words similar to your search word. This is especially useful when you are not sure how to spell your search word.
